A year-end appeal, four seconds of text and a short film

Mission Rebuild Nepal ended 2019 with the shortest appeal it ever wrote: one sentence over a short film, asking donors who cared about women's empowerment and access to education to remember it.

/ Part of Special Needs School, 2019–2021, Old Sinamangal (Pepsicola), Kathmandu-32.

On 4 December 2019, in the middle of the American giving season, the organisation posted a short film with a single line of text above it.

If women empowerment and access to education are your favorite causes, then please remember us.

The brevity was earned. By the end of 2019 the two causes named in that sentence were the whole of the organisation's active programme. The school-building fund for the Special School for Disabled and Rehabilitation Centre in Kathmandu was open, and the Salt Lake City gala in July had raised money jointly for that school and for Sheroes Hangout, the Indian collective run by and for survivors of acid attacks.

SSDRC is run by a woman who founded it with two children she found on the street, staffed largely by women, and attended by children whose families are frequently advised to keep them at home. The two causes in the sentence were not separate causes.

The film was watched a little over seven hundred times. It is a fair illustration of the organisation's reach at that point: small, specific, and dependent on a diaspora network rather than on advertising.
