Nepal needs us now

Nepal is going through another heartbreaking tragedy.

A devastating flood near the Nepal–Tibet border has caused severe destruction in Rasuwa and in communities downstream along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers. Roads and bridges have been washed away, homes have been destroyed, infrastructure has been badly damaged, and many families have lost loved ones, homes and livelihoods.

As rescue efforts continue, at least 95 people have been reported dead and hundreds more remain missing or out of contact. The situation is still developing, and the true extent of the damage may not be known for some time.

“These are not just numbers. Every person missing or lost belongs to a family that is waiting, searching, and hoping.”

Many survivors are now without proper shelter, food, clean water, clothing, medicine or electricity.

For those of us who know Rasuwa, Syaphru Besi, Timure, Langtang and the Trishuli corridor, this tragedy feels very close to home. And for the many friends of Nepal who have walked these trails and experienced the kindness and hospitality of the Nepali people, these communities are more than names on a map.

They need our help now.

An appeal to Nepalis around the world

Many of us left Nepal in search of education, opportunity and a better future for our families. But Nepal never left us.

Wherever we live today, we still carry our villages, our families, our rivers, our mountains and our memories with us. Distance does not make us less Nepali. At times like this, it reminds us how deeply connected we still are.

To Nepalis in the United States, Canada, Australia, Europe, the Middle East, Asia and everywhere else around the world: this is a moment for us to come together again. If thousands of us each do a little, together we can do something very meaningful.

“One family can help another family. One community can help another community. And together, we can help Nepal stand back up.”
